Buurthuis 2 is a fantasy film realized with the community center De Witte Boei in Amsterdam’s Wittenburg neighbourhood. Visitors and staff take on the roles of vampires, wizards, and zombies who are entangled in a real-estate development scheme to turn the residential neighborhood into a luxury spa resort. Anchored by a Dutch fairytale about the pitfalls of preposterous wealth, the plot and characters were developed in scriptwriting workshops together with the artist. In the process, Josefin Arnell explores the social fabric of a place that is highly specific and at the same time faces the same problems as many other communities.

The film draws from and reflects on the historic social ideals of community centers in the Netherlands, that used to serve as a tool to educate the lower classes. What does it mean to be a “good” citizen in the context of increasing wealth disparity, housing shortages, and welfare cuts? Arnell sees storytelling as a form of resistance that can involve different groups of people. Buurthuis 2 brings the community center into the cinema and cinema into the museum by playfully appropriating tropes of horror and fantasy

Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 2023 The temporary cinema installation in the new building of the Stedelijk Museum was designed with notions of blockbuster cinemas in mind. Red velvet curtains and colorful carpets created a stark contrast to the white cube halls of the museum. On entering, the audience was invited to take place infront of the room filling projection of Josefin Arnell’s short film production Buurthuis 2 for the 2023 edition of Prix de Rome; the most prestigious award for contemporary arts in the Netherlands.

(Rendering) Elements from blockbuster cinemas should contrast the white cube exhibition setting of Prix de Rome. Textiles, carpets, and props were partially recycled from the older exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum. 


AAAA - (Mis)using Business Practices (toward Artistic Policy Transformation)

“In this event, artists, cultural workers, and the general public is invited to experimentally workshop artistic engagement in local “value creation chains” by using basic business development techniques. Contemporary business methodologies, tools, and “skillsets” largely imitate artistic processes. Business conferences and consultancies proclaim “creativity”, “criticality”, and “collaboration” as highly valued parts of the domain of “problem-solving”. With the idea to interrogate and (mis)use some of these techniques, Heistinger will guide the workshop participants on a short excursion into the world of business development to co-create speculative proposals in relation to cultural policy in Aalborg.  

Lukas Heistinger is following-up on the Aalborg Anti-Artwashing Agreement (also known as AAAA) - a project by Bernhard Garnicnig and Heistinger that was curated and organized by f.eks. in 2019 - one of the steps in the foundation of AAAA - or the Aalborg Artist’s Association shortly thereafter. The workshop is part of an assessment of how artists can contribute to municipal, regional, and national cultural policy development in more sustainable ways. The result of the workshop (and subsequently the artist’s residency period) will be a video essay that is currently in development by APG.”
Experimenting with business development techniques for local cultural productions

Workshop participant worked in groups to try different ideation tools and test if they can be used to further interests of the artists in the city and use language and methods of business development for creating a vision for the cultural strategy of the city of Aalborg.

Interview with Scott William Raby for 27 days at Art Hub Copenhagen
As part of the exhibition 27DAGE (27DAYS), f.eks.’s organizer Scott William Raby initiated a discussion with artist Lukas Heistinger about his artistic practice and upcoming work, particularly about his collaborative project on the “artist as consultant”.

The first in three “publishing moments” activating f.eks.’s past, present, and upcoming work, this initial text marks the occasion of the exhibition opening and the beginning of f.eks.’s month-long presence at Art Hub Copenhagen in February 2022.

The project AAAA was an event-based public artwork initiated by artists Lukas Heistinger and Bernhard Garnicnig as part of their exhibition with the platform f.eks.

AAAA (which stood for AAlborg Anti-Artwashing) seeked to encourage interactions between the artistic, public, corporate, and government interests surrounding Aalborg’s transformation from an industrial to a cultural city. Through a combination of private conversations and public events the artists’ aim to rethink the parts art can play in the future contexts of the city.

AAAA invited local artists, developers, government officials, and publics into the project. After a collective sailboat voyage across the Limfjord, a final ‘Policy Transformation Proposal’ was handed over to the local government in a ceremony at the Aalborg harbor front.

The project AAAA forms the basis for Aalborg Artist’s Association, all rights to the name and logo was handed over to local artists in Northern Jutland in order to create a responsible long-term vision for art and culture in the city of Aalborg.

The exhibition curated by artist Hugo Canoiles related to one of the key figures of contemporary arts in Portugal, Ernesto de Sousa. Canoiles invited a number of artists in relation to different aspects of de Sousas work. The invitiation to Supergood was to create a public framework fo the exhibition and collaborate with the marketing department of the museum.

During the Portuguese military dictatorshop, suppression of critique  and cencorship  made the commercial medium of the poster one of the few outlets calling for political reform safely. As it was hardly possible to know who was spying on you and who to trust, the posters were an anonymous way breaking the silence created by fear and suppression. De Sousa had a large collection of posters that are today in multiple national and private collections. Re-using branding mechanisms and marketing strategies for our work, Supergood opened a dialgue to this  perspective  on appropriating  corporate strategies .

One work gallery was an offspace/gallery project by artist and curator Salvatore Vivinao in Vienna. For every show an artist or collective presented one single work. Supergood temporarily reinstalled the Supergood Bar at the tiny gallery location and served its fantastic tastes of existentialist realism at the opening event.
